Conserve peatlands and primary forests across the Central Cuvette,
The Congo Basin is the beating heart of Africa and the planet’s second-largest tropical rainforest, after the Amazon. Stretching across six countries, it covers more than 4 million square kilometres and holds over 30 billion tonnes of carbon making it the largest tropical peatland complex on Earth and one of humanity’s most powerful natural carbon sinks.
Home to over 75 million people and more than 10,000 species of plants and animals, including forest elephants, bonobos, and okapis, the Basin represents a living mosaic of biodiversity, culture, and resilience.
Yet this ecosystem, vital for global climate stability, faces growing pressures from deforestation, illegal logging, and land degradation. Protecting the Congo Basin is therefore not only an ecological necessity but also a global climate priority.
At Black River, we mobilize climate finance and technological innovation to protect, restore, and value the natural capital of the Congo Basin.
Through our Green Corridor Initiative, we connect ecosystems, communities, and investors to build a resilient, low-carbon regional economy.
We structure and finance projects that:
Conserve peatlands and primary forests across the Central Cuvette,
Restore degraded ecosystems and promote nature-based livelihoods,
Support community forest governance (CFCLs) rooted in inclusion and transparency,
Generate certified carbon assets (ITMOs, VCUs) aligned with Article 6 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Congo Basin is not only a carbon sink it is a living laboratory for climate innovation, biodiversity conservation, and green growth. By leveraging blockchain monitoring, AI-driven forest surveillance, and community participation, Black River ensures data integrity, transparency, and measurable impact across every project.
Our vision is to turn the Basin’s ecological potential into a regenerative economic engine, empowering local communities while ensuring global environmental stability.
